Shane Wadewitz Photography and wadewitz.com unofficially
began about 5:00 am, November 19th, 1999 on a sailing trip to
Ocracoke in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We left about midnight
and sailed overnight, observing the Leonid Meteor Shower as we
sailed. Not far from the channel that enters Ocracoke, there is
a sand bar, forming a small island that houses hundreds of thousands
of migratory birds for the night. The sun poked through some storm
clouds, thousands of birds took flight, and the following photo
was snapped.

In an instant my love for
the outdoors forged a relationship with a new, challenging hobby,
photography. From then on, every back country backpacking trip,
every day hike, every sailing trip, my camera came along.
I wanted a way to display my photographs on my computer at my
day job. I searched the web, found a good tool and created my
first screen saver (for personal use). When a co-worker saw the
pictures of Ocracoke and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and wanted
a copy for himself, my first sale was made.
